Aye, well met! Ye be findin' yourself wondering about what bawdy (or rather tame) shenanigans be awaitin' your arrival at the Renaissance Fair... pray, proceed to find out...
Man, it is difficult to speak in a way that I normally don't! But, let's start there...
If you do it right, reality of everyday life is left at the gate. Stepping into the Renaissance Festival (no matter which one you attend), it is like transporting into another time and place. And that's the beauty of it. The whole purpose. The Renaissance Festival is to experience how life was during the 14th to 17th centuries in Europe (allegedly). If you've ever gone to a Disney theme park, this is the same concept...except with DISNEY things and not Renaissance.
Sawyer says, "It feels like you stepped into another world, kinda like when you start playing a video game. One big LARP."

Costumes MAKE the experience and are encouraged. If you do not come in costume, you will likely feel out of place. LOTS of RenFest attendees opt in to wearing a costume. You can choose whatever "character" you want and holy smokes, it takes the adventure to a whole other level. The festivals we have attended have themed weekends (Ex. Pirate, Celtic, Royalty, etc.) so if you're wanting to dress to a certain theme, check the website of your local festival!
If you're not the kind of person to mastermind a costume, your normal attire is also fine. Don't let me dictate your clothing choice...I just personally prefer to take my experience to another level.
We have learned that there are not a whole lot of period accurate foods - Sawyer thinks the people of the Renaissance eras would have been obsessed with fried pickles LOL!! (that's what he ordered at our festival) - but we will always choose a turkey leg because it just feels right. Know that if you go to a festival, there will be food options that will suit most people's appetites (that are living in the 21st century).
Many amazing artisans, makers, creatives, and entertainers make this whole thing come to life. Lots of them are volunteers. Check out the shops! This is something we highly suggest! In our perspective, the Festival is also an art show. Go appreciate someone's creativity. Tell them you enjoy it. Make their day!
The Entertainers are OMG-AMAZING. The entertainment we saw while at our local Oklahoma Renaissance Festival was top notch. We saw arial acrobatics, drummers, belly dancing, bubble art, sword fighting, jousting/arena events, juggling, musical acts, and comedians. Plan to stop by and watch some performances!
It can become a wonderful tradition. Being around other Festival-goers who are just as excited to be there is just a good feeling. People are in good spirits...or have had a few spirits ha! Attending the Renaissance Festival becomes an annual affair for lots of people. Some guests become so enchanted that they go every weekend it is open or become part of the magic.
Y'all know we like to have fun. If you watch our YouTube videos or follow along on Facebook/Instagram/TikTok, you already know that. The Renaissance Festival is genuinely a good time if you have some imagination. Please consider looking up your local Festival and attending this year!
